Duties
- Conducts thorough crime scene investigations, including searching for, locating, collecting, identifying, processing, documenting and preserving physical evidence.
- Obtains casts or impressions of footprints, tire impressions and tool marks.
- Photographs/diagrams crime scenes, evidence and victims as necessary.
- Properly logs, stores, maintains and handles all evidence taken into custody.
- Transports evidence to other agencies as required, checks property out for court sessions.
- Disposes of evidence or lost/found property by returning to owner, destruction or auction, upon case clearance, in accordance with state and departmental rules and regulations.
- Processes and maintains documents related to auctions and narcotic disposals and assists with same.
- Distributes latent reports, laboratory analysis reports, property receipts, etc., to appropriate personnel.
- Attends depositions; provides court testimony as required.
- Fingerprints the general public, applicants for City positions, candidates, etc.; prepares identification cards.
- Prepares photo line-ups.
- Processes prisoner fingerprint cards. Maintains photograph and latent files.
- Works on a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours duties.
- Receives, reviews, prepares and/or processes a variety of documents, including property receipts, latent reports, fingerprint cards, crime scene documentation, laboratory transmittal, etc.
- Operates a vehicle, two-way radio, cameras, fingerprint kit, crime scene processing equipment, and other police-issued equipment, as well as a variety of other equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, copier, two-way radio, typewriter, laminating machine, etc. Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment required to complete assigned tasks.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other department supervisors and employees, attorneys, City personnel, court personnel, and the public.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in crime scene processing and analysis of evidence; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- A crime scene technician certificate is preferred.
- Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
- Must successful complete department training in crime scene procedures.
- Must successfully pass a background screening.

- Ability to operate and care for equipment to manufacturer’s specifications and/or within the specified parameters.
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the general public and colleagues.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work requires the ability to exert minimal but not constant physical effort to performs light work, typically involving some combination of balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking and may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 25 pounds), visual perception and discrimination, the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, perceive and discriminate color, perceive odors, and require oral communications.
